Community benefiting from ORU grants

Thanks to Central Electric’s Operation Round Up program, powered by donations from Central Electric members, several nonprofits are benefiting from grant funding. Over $24,000 is being put back into the surrounding communities to provide assistance for worthy projects that provide vital service needs. Grants were awarded to the following groups:

  1. Another Choice, Lee County – Funded $1,800.00 to repair and equip the waiting room for children being put in foster care.
  2. Buddy Back Pack Program, Harnett County – Funded $1,800.00 to purchase food items for school-aged children who have little or nothing to eat on weekends.
  3. Central Carolina Community College, Lee County – Funded $1,800.00 for the Dream Keepers Fund to help students in financial crises near graduation.
  4. Chatham County 4-H – Funded $1,800.00 to provide scholarships for children unable to cover the cost of the registration fee to attend 4-H summer camps.
  5. Chatham County Council on Aging, Inc. – Funded $1,800.00 for the purchase of the NuStep machine to build strength and invigorate users of all ability levels.
  6. Chatham County Literacy Council, Inc. – Funded $1,800.00 to recruit tutors and new students who want to learn English, become citizens and further their basic education skills and literacy.
  7. Chatham County Partnership for Children – Funded $1,800.00 to purchase learning materials for child care centers and homes in Chatham County.
  8. Habitat for Humanity, Chatham County – Funded $1,800.00 to purchase building materials.
  9. Helping Hands Clinic, Lee County – Funded $1,800.00 to supply equipment for the diabetic program.
  10. Lee County High School JROTC – Funded $1,500.00 for Junior Reserve Officers training and to help students in need attend the Annual Military Ball.
  11. Lee County Partnership for Children – Funded $1,800.00 to purchase books for children who participate in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
  12. Project Graduation 2017, Chatham County – Funded $1,800.00 to pay for entertainment for a safe graduation celebration alternative.
  13. Treasure Chest Ministries, Lee County – Funded $1,800.00 to provide Christmas gifts and a meal for children of homeless and at-risk families.
  14. Western Harnett Lions Club – Funded $1,800.00 to help provide eye exams and glasses for children.

Operation Round Up is a volunteer program in which Central Electric members can choose to “round up” their electric bill to the next whole dollar each month. Voluntary contributions are made to the Central Electric Member Care Trust and grants are awarded for worthy projects by the Member Care Trust Board of Directors. Applications for 2017 second-quarter grant opportunities must be submitted by May 1. Grant recipients will be announced following the board meeting on May 18.
