Investing in the future leaders of tomorrow
Have you ever wondered what it is like to walk the halls of the Capitol with members of Congress? Local students, Grayson Morris and Tannin Scheidt were recently able to do just that!
Central Electric sponsored Morris and Scheidt to take the trip of a lifetime as part of the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. Grayson, a student at Overhills High School, and Tannin, a student at Chatham Charter, joined 41 high school students from North Carolina and over 1,800 youth from across the country June 15-21 in D.C.
While there, they visited some of D.C.’s most famous attractions and historic memorials, enjoyed unique experiences around the nation’s capital, and engaged in discussions with U.S. senators and several members of the U.S. House of Representatives on Capitol Hill. In addition to meeting members of Congress, they learned more about American history and the electric cooperative business model.
Youth programs like the annual trip to D.C., help to not only teach students about their local cooperative, but also open the door to new opportunities, whether that be leadership, education, or service to their communities.
Central Electric sponsors two local high school students each year for the Youth Tour. If you are a high school junior or senior, the application period for next year’s Youth Tour begins in September and runs through January 2025.
